Over 350 people in first week back MPs campaign for council action on ‘awful’ road

Updated: 5 days ago

In its first week, over 350 people have signed Hitchin MP Alistair Strathern’s letter calling on Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) to adopt and fix Old Bridge Way, a key Shefford road through the town that is riddled with deep potholes.

The signees support Strathern’s letter which requests CBC take action to bring the long running saga of the road to an end. Recently, the road became ‘ownerless’ after formerly being a privately-owned and unmaintained unadopted road, despite being a main though way in the centre of the town.

There is still time for residents to sign, using this form

Following years of wear and tear, Old Bridge Way has dozens and dozens of large potholes. Several constituents have written to Strathern’s office to report punctures. Such is the dire state of the road, many cars weave to avoid the potholes, resulting in many near misses.

Strathern has for the last year been campaigning to fix the road and make it easier for councils across the country to adopt private roads like Old Bridge Way.

Alistair Strathern MP, said:

“Thank you to everyone who has signed my letter so far. It’s vital CBC understand the strength of feeling on this locally.

“It is clear how frustrated and fed up people in Shefford are with the state of this road.

“Residents can still sign my letter, and get their voices heard.

“Old Bridge Way is in an awful condition. It is long past time to fix it and bring it up to standard.”
