MP celebrates Central Bedfordshire NHS App Day

Alistair Strathern

PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP

FRIDAY 14th FEBRUARY 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alistair Strathern, MP for the Hitchin constituency, visited Shefford Medical Centre on Friday to mark and celebrate #CentralBedsNHSAppDay

The aim of the day is to spread awareness of the apps’ new tools and encourage local patients to make use of its new functionalities. After gaining increased prominence during the Covid outbreak, the NHS app has grown to become a health hub for its 33 million users.

As part of the Government’s drive to reform the NHS and improve the experience of patients using it, improving and expanding the range of services available to patients through the app is a priority.

Patients can now order repeat prescriptions, arrange GP and vaccination appointments, see their medical and appointment history, arrange to donate organs, take part in health research, and access a catalogue of health advice.

The app is being continually developed as part of efforts to fully digitalise the NHS to bring it into the 21st century and increase efficiency and capacity.

Strathern has made improving local GP services one of his top priorities since being elected. Part of this work has involved working with individual practices and their stakeholders on their issues. For example, he has been supporting Shefford Medical Centre to secure funding to kit out the entirety of the building it occupies.

Alistair Strathern MP said:

“It was wonderful to meet with some of our fantastic local healthcare staff at Shefford Medical Centre, and to celebrate the success so far of the NHS app.

“If we are going to ensure the NHS is a fully functioning health service fit for the 21st century, improving tools like the NHS app is an important step.

“As an increasingly one-stop-shop for healthcare, I encourage everyone to download it if possible. It’s a great way to book appointments, prescriptions and check records, all while reducing pressures on NHS staff.

“Very understandably though, many in our community might struggle to use the app, so I’m thankful to see while we ramp up the digitalisation of the NHS, we will continue to offer all important traditional forms of interaction too.”
