Local MP backs Langford Parish Council campaign for CBC white line u-turn

Alistair Strathern

PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP

TUESDAY 11th FEBRUARY 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alistair Strathern, Member of Parliament for the Hitchin constituency has backed Langford Parish Council’s campaign for CBC to ensure Edworth Road to have white lines throughout its entirety.

Currently, Edworth Road in Langford only has white lines for some of its length. The fast 60mph road connects Langford to the A1. CBC have previously refused to fully line the road, leading to local concerns about its impact on unsafe driving.

Strathern has written to Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) to call for the road to be fully lined and has recorded a video at the site to announce his support and urge local residents to back the parish council’s petition. This can be seen here.

Constituents can sign a petition on CBC’s website to add their name to the campaign.

Alistair Strathern MP said:

“As a connecting road to a dual carriage way I share the concerns of many Langford residents about the safety of Edworth Road without white lines.

“I will be pressing the council to review their initial refusal to act on residents calls. “In the meantime, I encourage all local residents to sign the petition to add your voice to Langford Parish Council’s campaign.”

Julian Vaughan, local campaigner and parish councillor, said:

“It’s extremely disappointing that Central Bedfordshire Council sees road markings as an optional extra, rather than a vital aspect of safer roads.

“Their decision not to white line the entire length of Edworth Road not only completely disregards Department for Transport guidance for unlit rural roads, but puts road users at risk on what has become as busy link road from the A1 to Langford and the surrounding villages.

“I urge them to rethink their ongoing refusal to white line Edworth Road and their broader approach to road safety measures.”
