PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP

TUESDAY 1ST APRIL 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alistair Strathern, the MP for the Hitchin constituency, whose seat includes eastern Bedfordshire, has welcomed news of a significant £7.3m boost in funding for Beds Police.

Beds Police will receive the £7.3m in a renewal of special grant funding. Strathern, the other Labour Beds MPs, and Beds Police and Crime Commissioner John Tizard, all supported Beds Police’s application for further funding.

The group wrote to, and met with, the Policing Minister to call for the renewal for a force that has been historically under-funded. Despite containing Luton and Bedford, the police force has been classed as ‘rural’ and inappropriately funded as a result.

The renewal of the grant comes on top of an increase in Beds Police’s overall budget this year.

Strathern has been campaigning for better local police funding since he became an MP

in 2023. This has involved meeting with ministers and speaking in Parliament.

Alistair Strathern MP said:

“It’s brilliant news that Beds Police will receive £7.3m in special grant funding, on top if its increased budget.

“These funds will be key for the police to have the resources they need to keep us all safe.

“Our police men and women do tough, incredible community work every day, and we owe it to them to give the resources that match their skill and commitment.”
