PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP

FRIDAY 25th APRIL 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alistair Strathern, the MP for the Hitchin constituency, visited Shefford Lower School’s new breakfast club to mark the pilot launch of universal breakfast clubs in primary schools.

The school is one three local pilots secured for Strathern’s constituency, out of 750 chosen across the country ahead of a universal rollout of breakfast clubs in all primary schools

Shefford Lower School joins Meppershall Church of England Academy and Etonbury Academy in hosting the pilots.

Research suggests breakfast clubs boost children’s attainment in school, health and amount of socialising. The clubs are estimated to save parents on average £450 a year.

The experience of pilot schools including Shefford Lower will go on to inform the Government’s national roll out for all primary schools.

Alistair Strathern MP said:

“It was great to see so many students at Shefford Lower School’s new breakfast club, enjoying healthy food and the company of friends.

“As a teacher and then children’s services council lead I saw first-hand the impact breakfast clubs could have, so I’m delighted Labour has committed to rolling them out nationally.

“These breakfast clubs are a fantastic boost for children’s wellbeing, social confidence and academic ability.

“I was glad to secure three pilots for our constituency, and I look forward to helping to expand this pilot rollout to all primary schools in our area, and across the country at large.”
