PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP
MONDAY 28TH APRIL 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alistair Strathern, the MP for the Hitchin constituency, joined residents in Stondon to celebrate the opening of their new Community Centre this morning.
The Centre, which is situated at Stondon Recreation Ground, comes following housing expansion in Lower Stondon and has been funded as part of developer contributions for local infrastructure.
The new building boasts a 150-capacity main hall, a function room, meeting rooms, Home and Away dressing rooms, a kitchen and a bar. Its car park contains over 50 spaces, with 35 of these equipped with electric charging. It also has solar panels on its roof to minimise energy costs.
It will be used by a wide range of groups locally, from dance classes to football clubs, and will be run by a newly formed village hall committee.
Strathern has been campaigning since before he became an MP for new housing to come with new infrastructure. This work has led him to campaign across our area for GP surgery expansions, smoother and expanded roads and much improved public transport. Alongside the village hall, Strathern is also campaigning for the expansion of Lower Stondon GP surgery following significant growth in the village.
Recently he spoke in Parliament to call on Central Beds Council to use more of its substantial, unspent infrastructure fund, which could be used to fund more crucial local infrastructure. See here.
Alistair Strathern MP said:
“It was great to visit the brand-new Stondon Community Centre this morning and meet all the volunteers and locals whose hard work made it possible.
“It is an excellent new facility for Stondon, and an example of the kind of infrastructure we should be building with new housing across Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.
“It’ll be a fantastic asset for the whole community, and I look forward to seeing it come to life as a host for everything from local football clubs to dance classes.
“I’m clear more is needed though, including a crucial expansion of the GP surgery here in Stondon.
“Alongside pushing our councils to invest more in our communities, I will continue my efforts to reduce and remove the obstacles put in front of local authorities to deliver the new infrastructure we need.”
