4 February 2024: My week in Parliament and Mid Bedfordshire

Updated: Feb 5

A quick update from me after another busy week in Westminster and across our constituency. In Parliament I continued my work on the Freehold and Leasehold bill committee. It’s clear speaking to families locally that many new homeowners have been badly let down by current legislation, and left open to exploitation by poor managing agendas and uncertain road adoption measures. Sadly, while the governments bill includes some welcome measures, amendments which would have gone further in tacking the route causes of the issues weee voted down, so on Thursday I pushed ministers to confirm when they would bring forward the proper solutions local homeowners deserve.  https://fb.watch/p-w8MbZi4b/

Back in the constituency, I was out in Campton Fields estate in Shefford to understand how issues with estate adoption were affecting local families. I’ll be pushing developers and the council to get these issues solved locally, but ultimately this needs national reform to solve once and for all. https://www.bedfordtoday.co.uk/.../mp-calls-for-action-to...

In Parliament last week I also raised the issue of recent flooding with Ministers last week. Whilst the flood risk profile of a number of towns and villages has changed over recent years, our investment in flood defences hasn’t kept up, so I pushed ministers to go further on this issue. https://fb.watch/p-weJlHeMS/

Separately, I joined residents and local stakeholders at a meeting with Maulden Parish council to discuss the recent flooding. There was really good engagement from all on what we can do to improve things locally, and clear national change needed too. I’ll be continuing to champion action locally and in Parliament to address the challenges raised.

I met with representatives of our local firefighters to understand challenges the current state of services locally, and understand some of the challenges current funding constraints are causing for them.

I also met with representatives of one of our local credit unions to discuss how we can ensure more people can access some of the fantastic support they can offer, and heard about some of the great schemes they have established with local councils and housing associations.

On Friday I held my latest constituency surgery at the Rufus centre in Flitwick, thank you to everyone who came along. This Friday I’ll be in Marston from 4-5.30pm.

Finally a big thank you to everyone across the constituency who took the time to engage with me this week, from raising issues and sharing experiences to simple messages of support or queries, every message is appreciated!
